Pinterest settles discrimination lawsuits by releasing former employees from NDAs and pledging $50M to overhaul its corporate culture and promote diversity

New York Times Michael Levenson

Context & Ripple Effects

Pinterest’s settlement follows its board-directed outside investigation into workplace-culture complaints and a separate $22.5M settlement with former COO Françoise Brougher over alleged gender discrimination. The company had also said it would adopt a special committee’s recommendations on racial and gender discrimination.

The new agreement adds two elements to that remediation arc: former employees are no longer bound by the relevant NDAs, and Pinterest has attached $50M to culture and diversity changes. A related shareholder settlement shows the allegations had also become a governance issue, not solely an employment dispute.

First-order effects

  • Former Pinterest employees covered by the settlement can discuss their experiences without the NDA restriction that had limited public disclosure.
  • Pinterest commits $50M to corporate-culture and diversity work while resolving discrimination litigation and the associated shareholder claims.

Second-order effects

  • Pinterest’s board and management must turn prior committee recommendations into funded implementation, making culture reform a more explicit governance and spending responsibility.
  • Releasing former employees from NDAs increases the weight of workplace practices and follow-through in Pinterest’s public accountability after the settlement.

Third-order effects

  • The sequence points to workplace-discrimination disputes being addressed through a combined model of legal settlement, board oversight, disclosure flexibility, and dedicated remediation funding rather than private resolution alone.

The trend: Workplace-culture litigation is increasingly pushing companies to pair settlements with visible governance reforms and restrictions on NDA use.

No worker should be silenced from sharing their deeply personal story of harassment or discrimination in the workplace just because they signed an NDA https://www.reuters.com/...

Thanks to @IfeomaOzoma's leadership, we are seeing real change in tech. I want to see more companies look to this as guidance. Even if it is out of fiduciary responsibility to shareholders. https://twitter.com/...

In its most recent quarter, Pinterest generated $633 million in revenue and $94 million in profit. $50 million for Pinterest to “overhaul its corporate culture and promote diversity” is not insignificant but it also doesn't break the bank. https://twitter.com/...

Pinterest agrees to spend $50 million on reforms to resolve discrimination allegations. This shows that even young tech companies are not immune from this. https://www.nytimes.com/...

Now, what's stopping other employers from releasing former employees who experienced discrimination from their NDAs? This should be the new bar. @IfeomaOzoma https://twitter.com/...
