It's been a great pleasure to help Tesla towards its goals over the last 5 years and a difficult decision to part ways. In that time, Autopilot graduated from lane keeping to city streets and I look forward to seeing the exceptionally strong Autopilot team continue that momentum.

My take on the state of @Tesla FSD: 1/ very hard problem 2/ higher than human expectations 3/ underpowered silicon for expectations 4/ mistake using camera-only without radar or LiDAR https://www.cnbc.com/... $TSLA

Departure of Karpathy is significant. He has been vocal proponent and defender of Autopilot in last 6-12 months. He's leaving when 8 people have died in 6 Tesla crashes in the last 2 months - all w hallmarks of Autopilot involvement (high speed, no braking/evasive steering) 1/n h…

Andrej Karpathy was the Director of AI. he lead the AI team. Ashok leads Autopilot Software, which is the larger team with the engineers who actually make the Autopilot updates. @elonmusk

Andrej Karpathy's transition out of Tesla has been planned for a long time. Starting over a year ago Elon started making a point to everyone that Ashok was leading Autopilot software, not Andrej. Now I know that it's because Andrej was starting to talk about moving on.

Yesterday I was looking at Elon's Twitter clownshow and wondering how Elon managed to hang onto onto Andrej when previously being head of autonomy at Tesla was like being Spinal Tap's drummer. And today... https://twitter.com/...
