When Amazon introduced Routines back in 2017 they were strictly first-party — one command firing multiple actions — and the 2020 app revamp went the other way entirely, replacing third-party skill suggestions on the main screen with frequently used actions. This announcement reverses that instinct: developers now author and recommend Routines themselves, extending last year's push of 50-plus features to grow the skills ecosystem from discovery into creation.

The other two changes widen Alexa's aperture further. Shopping moves into skills, making the voice layer a transaction surface, and Alexa learns to coexist with rival assistants on the same hardware instead of demanding exclusivity.
