Instagram's Dual copies BeReal's front and back camera capture feature, but misses the point: people like BeReal because it's non-addictive by design

TechCrunch Amanda Silberling

Context & Ripple Effects

Instagram has used feature imitation successfully before: Stories leveraged Instagram's existing scale after copying a matured format. Dual applies that playbook to BeReal's simultaneous front-and-back capture, but the related coverage identifies BeReal's deliberately less-addictive product design—not the camera mechanic alone—as its differentiator.

The format quickly became a competitive category rather than an Instagram-only experiment, with TikTok introducing Now's daily dual-camera prompts in the US. BeReal later shifted Discovery toward a friends-of-friends feed while reporting about 20M daily active users, underscoring that its product is evolving beyond the original capture feature.

First-order effects

  • Instagram users gain Dual's front-and-back capture inside a platform built around recommendations and retention, while BeReal retains the behavioral constraints the article says users value.
  • BeReal now faces a larger incumbent reproducing its most visible interaction, making its less-addictive design and social context more central to differentiation.

Second-order effects

  • TikTok's Now launch puts daily prompting and dual-camera capture into direct competition across major social apps, forcing BeReal to compete on the full experience rather than novelty alone.
  • Instagram's earlier success with Stories gives it distribution advantages, but copying the capture layer does not automatically reproduce the usage pattern associated with BeReal.

Third-order effects

  • Social platforms are increasingly able to commoditize camera interactions quickly; durable differentiation shifts toward the rules that govern frequency, feeds, and social distribution.
  • BeReal's later friends-of-friends shift suggests the category's longer-term contest is over what kind of social graph and engagement model surrounds authentic capture, not merely whether two cameras fire at once.

The trend: Authenticity-focused social formats are being absorbed by larger networks, with product rules around prompts, feeds, and engagement becoming the harder feature set to replicate.

in an apparent attempt to copy the popular app BeReal, Instagram is rolling out its own feature (called 'Dual') to take disappearing photos using the front and back cameras simultaneously left is IG stories, right is BeReal https://twitter.com/...

Some news: Instagram is temporarily walking back some its changes amid mounting criticism. The full-screen feed beta is going away, and the number of recommendations is going down —> https://www.platformer.news/ ...

interesting context from a former instagram product designer. (for comparison, bereal launched in 2019) if true, i think it is a little embarrassing that it took a company the size of Meta 3 years to ship such a simple feature a sign of day 2 at Meta? https://twitter.com/...

@parismartineau not really embarrassing, just an unfortunate complication of scale the reason it took so long is because the android camera API was terrible and leads didn't want to ship something that only worked on high-end iOS devices — so it sat on the shelf until device supp…

@parismartineau this feature is actually ~3 years old, maybe convenient timing that it just finally shipped to 100% but it definitely existed before bereal

@GK3 @parismartineau I also prototyped this feature for Facebook Stories several years ago.

apparently Instagram hyped Dual up to the press as a video-centric feature for showing your reaction during IG reels. but idk, it seems more reminiscent of BeReal to me than anything else it doesnt default to video unless you hold the take picture button https://www.adweek.com/..…
