Meta partners with JioMart, an e-commerce venture between Reliance Retail and Jio Platforms, to launch a grocery shopping service on WhatsApp in India

TechCrunch

Context & Ripple Effects

This launch closes a loop opened two years earlier, when Facebook's Jio investment was framed as a way to connect WhatsApp with Indian businesses through JioMart. A three-city Maharashtra pilot with 1,200 grocery stores tested the mechanics in 2020, before JioMart scaled its own delivery network across dozens of cities.

What changes now is that grocery ordering moves from a test into a standing service inside WhatsApp itself — the channel where most of India's smartphone users already are — giving Reliance Retail a storefront that bypasses app downloads entirely.

First-order effects

  • JioMart gains direct access to WhatsApp's massive Indian user base without requiring a separate app install, while Meta gets its clearest proof point yet for monetizing WhatsApp as a commerce channel rather than just a messaging one.

Second-order effects

  • Rival Indian e-commerce players must now treat chat-based ordering as a competitive front rather than an experiment, since the incumbent grocer has claimed the default messaging app as its storefront.
  • The commerce flow creates demand for native payment rails inside the chat — a gap Meta moved to fill by later launching in-chat payments for WhatsApp businesses supporting cards, WhatsApp Pay, and UPI.

Third-order effects

  • If the pattern holds, messaging platforms become primary retail infrastructure in markets like India, shifting industry structure away from standalone marketplace apps toward chat-first commerce owned by whoever controls the conversation layer — and the Rest of World reporting that JioMart reached 600K daily deliveries across 260 cities via WhatsApp integration suggests the model compounds once embedded.

The trend: Messaging apps are being converted from communication tools into transactional commerce rails, with India as the proving ground for chat-first grocery retail.

This UI within WhatsApp seems smooth and better than most external apps. WA could move towards a super app in India, but marketplace model unlike WeChat (much less monetizable for Meta) https://twitter.com/...

Reminds me of this: 2011-13: Indian VCs: India will be like the United States 2014-15: Indian VCs: India will be like China 2016: Bezos: ‘India is a different market.’ ...and this is WhatsApp's 3764th attempt to launch India's super-app like China's WeChat :p #GameOn https://twit…

Whatsapp finally dragging itself into the Super app conversation? Messenger has struggled/died as the anointed western heir to the WeChat throne. https://twitter.com/...

Everyone building e-commerce on WhatsApp hang tight. Zuckerberg is coming for you and your customers. You already provided the data. For free. https://twitter.com/...

Their whole payments move is just a feature in their commerce play. Could be massive if they crack user adoption. Would presume that Reliance eventually acquires Dunzo to do last mile deliveries. https://twitter.com/...

WhatApp moving to house the transaction first vs. own the payment strategy makes sense. Digital payments don't happen in a vacuum. That said, Meta is about to learn that conversational commerce is just one layer of the social commerce stack. https://twitter.com/...

It's a decent UX for a small number of SKUs but wouldn't work well if the catalog has thousands of products UNLESS they personalize it. Search would also help but personalized catalogs based on past shopping experience, usage, etc. would kill it. https://twitter.com/...

Excited to understand how difficult it'll be to ban WhatsApp in future in a country with 100cr+ smartphones. Net neutrality will be in danger again. Love the idea of small businesses who can't afford the infrastructure on WhatsApp. Otherwise pure evil strategy. https://twitter.co…

WhatsApp users in India can buy groceries/household goods directly through the app for the first time. WhatsApp has been talking about the shopping potential for years, so this is a big step https://twitter.com/...

As I say every few months, I look forward to seeing if Meta can turn WhatsApp into a real business with, like, money and stuff. https://twitter.com/...

A first-ever end-to-end shopping experience on WhatsApp. People can now buy groceries from JioMart inside a native WhatsApp chat. Business messaging is gaining real momentum and conversational experience is going to be a gamer changer. (https://about.fb.com/...)
