Nvidia announces the RTX 4080 and RTX 4090 GPUs; the $1,599 RTX 4090 is 2x-4x faster than the 3090 Ti, comes with 24GB of GDDR6X memory, and ships on October 12

The Verge Tom Warren

Context & Ripple Effects

Nvidia's prior flagship step, the $1,199 RTX 3080 Ti launch, framed performance gains as the reason to pay for the top gaming tier. The RTX 4090 raises that flagship entry price while pairing it with a much larger claimed generational performance jump.

The RTX 40 family did not remain confined to desktop cards: Nvidia later extended RTX 4080 and 4090 branding to laptops, and subsequently refreshed the desktop line with the lower-priced RTX 4080 Super. That makes this launch the starting point for a broader product-stack and pricing cycle.

First-order effects

  • Nvidia gives high-end PC buyers a new $1,599 flagship option on October 12, while positioning the RTX 4080 and RTX 4090 as successors to the prior RTX 30-series top tier.
  • The claimed 2x-to-4x RTX 4090 performance gain and 24GB memory specification reset the comparison point for Nvidia's own flagship GPU customers.

Second-order effects

  • Nvidia's board partners, PC builders, and buyers must align premium configurations around the new RTX 40-series launch timing and the RTX 4090's higher price point.
  • The later RTX 4080 Super's $999 price and modest performance increase show Nvidia using a refresh to revise the RTX 4080's value proposition after the initial launch.

Third-order effects

  • Nvidia's subsequent laptop rollout and desktop refresh point to a product-family strategy in which one flagship architecture is segmented across desktop, mobile, and later price-performance updates.
  • If that cadence persists, flagship GPU launches will increasingly establish an initial premium ceiling that Nvidia can recalibrate through mid-cycle variants rather than a single fixed generation-wide price.

The trend: Nvidia is turning flagship GPU generations into multi-stage product stacks, spanning premium desktop launches, mobile versions, and later value-oriented refreshes.

Frankly, it's sad to see entire sell side just regurgitate Nvidia's outlandish performance claims when the chip maker's own slide shows only 50% increase for the main widely played AAA game (Assassin's Creed). Flight Sim and Warhammer aren't representative titles for most gamers …

bought a 3070 in August and a 3060 powered laptop in 2021. Today, Nvidia released products that offer 2-4x perf increase. Digital clones, metaverse, smart car announcements are going to keep Nvidia extremely relevant to the future of tech. Solid stuff. https://www.techmeme.com/..…

I really have no idea who Nvidia believes their customers are right now. The miners are gone. The people willing to spend any price for raw power are out of the market. There are used cards to spare. Most people can't even game in 4K yet. This is a lead balloon.

nvidia absolutely destroying scalpers with the 4080 and 4090 card announcement by just pricing them at scalper prices themselves

I'm sort of interested in a 4080 16GB but tbh, for $1200, I think I'll just enjoy my white 3080 a while longer. Especially with the higher power requirements
