Podcast app Pocket Casts, which WordPress parent company Automattic acquired in July 2021, releases its mobile clients on GitHub under an open-source license

TechCrunch Paul Sawers

Context & Ripple Effects

Pocket Casts has changed hands twice in four years: a public radio collective including NPR took it over in 2018 and ran it as a joint venture while reportedly losing $800K on it, before Automattic bought the app in July 2021 (the acquisition from the NPR-led collective). Opening the mobile clients on GitHub is the first structural move Automattic has made with the property since taking it over.

The move also fits a recognizable Automattic pattern: six months later the company would acquire the WordPress plugin ActivityPub and hire its developer to bridge blogs with Mastodon and the Fediverse (the ActivityPub acquisition), signaling that open protocols and open code are how Automattic integrates acquisitions rather than a one-off gesture.

First-order effects

  • Developers can now read, modify, and build on Pocket Casts' iOS and Android clients directly on GitHub, shifting feature development and bug-fixing capacity outside Automattic's own payroll.

Second-order effects

  • Rival podcast apps now compete against a product whose roadmap is partly community-driven, pressuring them to justify closed clients on features or polish alone; for Automattic, maintenance costs on two mobile codebases partially shift to contributors.

Third-order effects

  • If the pattern holds, Automattic's acquisition playbook treats purchased consumer apps as candidates for open-sourcing rather than proprietary growth bets — a structural alternative to the venture-scale monetization path that left Pocket Casts losing money under public radio ownership.

The trend: Automattic is extending the WordPress-style open-source operating model across its acquired products, using openness as both integration strategy and cost structure.

“And wouldn't it be nice if trying out a new social network was that easy?” @photomatt WDYT about adding support for the @at_protocol to @WordPress? (I don't a dog in this particular fight but given your question 😉) https://twitter.com/...

Podcasting is amazing. For podcasting to be as robust as the web, it needs popular open source clients. Here's ours: https://ma.tt/...

Wow, Pocket Casts has open-sourced their client apps: https://blog.pocketcasts.com/ ... I love that this will make it more likely that we'll get more podcast apps. For podcasting to remain healthy, open, and free (as in freedom), we need a diverse ecosystem of MANY different apps…
