Sources: tech news website Protocol, launched by former Politico owner Robert Allbritton in February 2020, will close later this week and lay off its ~60 staff

CNN Oliver Darcy

Context & Ripple Effects

Robert Allbritton, who built Politico into a policy-news franchise before selling it, launched Protocol in February 2020 as his attempt to repeat the playbook in tech coverage. Its closure barely two and a half years later ends that second bet, and lands in a stretch of repeated retrenchment across venture-backed media and adjacent startups: Medium cut a third of its staff in 2017, Tech In Asia shed a third of its team in 2018, and CoinDesk cut 45% of its editorial staff in 2023 as its parent pursued a sale.

The throughline in the related coverage is that standalone, well-funded news and media ventures keep failing to reach durable scale — Post.News shut down in 2024 after admitting it could not grow fast enough — which makes Protocol's shutdown a data point in a consolidation pattern rather than a one-off.

First-order effects

  • Protocol's roughly 60 journalists and commercial staff lose their jobs this week, and Allbritton's second media venture after Politico ends entirely.
  • Readers and advertisers of dedicated tech-policy and tech-business coverage lose one of the few outlets purpose-built for that beat.

Second-order effects

  • Established outlets competing on tech policy coverage — including Politico, the newsroom Allbritton built first — gain readers, talent, and advertising share as Protocol's audience disperses.
  • Protocol's reporters become a hiring pool for rivals and for corporate communications teams, tightening the market for journalists who cover the intersection of tech and policy.

Third-order effects

  • The pattern across Protocol, Post.News, and the layoffs at Medium, Tech In Asia, and CoinDesk points toward tech-policy news consolidating inside diversified incumbents rather than surviving as standalone, founder-funded outlets.
  • If standalone tech-news economics keep failing, funders may retreat from building new general-audience tech publications altogether, leaving coverage of the beat thinner and more concentrated.

The trend: Standalone, well-capitalized news ventures are proving unable to reach sustainable scale, pushing tech-policy coverage back toward diversified incumbent newsrooms.

News: Protocol, the upstart technology news website launched by Politico publisher Robert Allbritton in early 2020, will shutter later this week. The move will impact approximately 60 staffers. https://www.cnn.com/...

I was here for Protocol's first really sad day in April 2020, and it looks like I'll be here for the last too. It's been a wild and fulfilling experience building a newsroom with such a special group. If you have ideas for what's next, lay 'em on me. https://www.cnn.com/...

I've always said Protocol was on the rollercoaster journey of a startup. From launch in Feb 2020, layoffs months later, to astounding rebound and growth, followed by an acquisition by Axel Springer — we'd done it all. Now it's the end of that journey: Protocol is shutting down.

Well, some personal news, and also it's bad: @protocol is shutting down for good. It's been an absolute pleasure working with so many wonderful reporters and editors through some extremely chaotic times for the world and for media in particular. I'm sad. https://www.cnn.com/...

Really sorry to hear @protocol will be shutting down. Some of the very best in gaming/interactive/metaverse journalism over the past two years since launch. h/t to the great reporters such as @nickstatt, @jank0 and alum @SethSchiesel https://twitter.com/...

I am absolutely heartbroken and I've absolutely loved my (very recently 2) years at Protocol. If you've been looking for a skilled copy editor (ask @brianphillips!) or a music writer, or even a culture editor, please reach out. https://twitter.com/...

I've loved working @protocol and covering climate tech alongside some of the best in the game. It's been a privilege to write about the climate and the people trying to fix it. DMs are open as always. https://www.cnn.com/...

Still not over the shock that Protocol is shutting down. It's my first full-time job & I learned so much from the wonderful journalists around me. If you need someone who understands big tech, policy, data, silicon valley... plz find them in this thread👇 https://www.cnn.com/...
