Ethereum developers aim for April 12 for the Shanghai hard fork, which would complete the network's transition to proof-of-stake, delayed from March 2023

CoinDesk Margaux Nijkerk

Context & Ripple Effects

Shanghai is the second half of a two-step transition: when Ethereum flipped to proof of stake in September, about 11% of ETH was staked and earning but locked, with withdrawals promised only once this upgrade shipped. The April 12 target, pushed back from March, follows a familiar pattern — the Merge itself slipped past an initial June expectation before developers settled on September 15.

The timing matters because it lands on a weak market: ether is down more than 21% over the past week, so the unlock arrives into falling prices rather than euphoria.

First-order effects

  • Validators and stakers who have been unable to exit since the Merge regain withdrawal rights, converting an illiquid position into one they can unwind after April 12.

Second-order effects

  • An unlock into a market where ether has already dropped 21% in a week raises near-term selling pressure, especially for stakers who entered to capture yield they could not yet access.
  • Liquid-staking and staking-service providers now compete on how quickly and cheaply they let users exit, making withdrawal speed a differentiator rather than a promise.

Third-order effects

  • If Shanghai ships close to target, it closes the loop on the Merge-era bet that Ethereum's roadmap slips but eventually lands — reinforcing confidence in the remaining upgrade queue even as network metrics like daily ether burned hit all-time lows around March 22.
  • The precedent of a hard deadline for unlocking a large share of the asset's supply becomes a template other proof-of-stake networks will be measured against when their own lockups mature.

The trend: Ethereum's upgrade cadence — repeatedly delayed targets that eventually ship — is moving the network from transition mode into one judged on usage and revenue rather than roadmap promises.

Isn't it beautiful how under PoS, we can choose the exact time for upgrades, unlike PoW where there's always uncertainty? As Alfred North Whitehead once said, “Civilization advances by extending the number of operations we can perform without thinking about them.” https://twitter…

More exciting news. Ethereum's Shanghai upgrade (more accurately called “Shapella") has an official target date. Developers agreed it will be April 12 (still to be confirmed on GitHub) for the long-awaited upgrade that will enable staked ETH withdrawals. https://www.coindesk.com/…
