The SFPD arrested IT company owner Nima Momeni for allegedly killing Bob Lee, and say the two men knew each other and were driving together before the killing

Mission Local Joe Eskenazi

Discussion

  • @dangillmor@mastodon.social Dan Gillmor on mastodon
Bob Lee's murder in San Francisco was tragic, and evil.  So was the instant rush to judgment of the crowd that seizes on any individual crime as proof the city is a random-crime-everywhere hellhole (in fact the crime rate is historically low). …
  • @steveriggins@mastodon.social Steve Riggins on mastodon
@Techmeme @donmelton And Elon blamed the homeless crime on S.F.
  • @HateToShave@mastodon.social @HateToShave@mastodon.social on mastodon
@Techmeme this is a really good, informative article, too, by @MLNow  —  Lays out a lot of how the media sensationalizes crime in SF by painting a picture without all of the details. …
  • @mmasnick@mastodon.social Mike Masnick on mastodon
So for over a week now Elon Musk's circle of friends have been going on and on insisting that Bob Lee's killer was obviously an unhoused individual and blaming the city for not jailing more people. …

BREAKING: Mission Local has learned that San Francisco police this morning traveled to Emeryville to make an arrest in the April 4 killing of tech exec Bob Lee. The alleged killer also works in tech and purportedly knew Lee. From @esksf https://missionlocal.org/... https://twitte…
  • @pitdesi Sheel Mohnot on x
The Bob Lee attack was by this guy- they were driving in the same car together when he was stabbed. Wonder if we'll ever get to know the circumstances. But it was not a random attack. https://missionlocal.org/... https://twitter.com/... https://twitter.com/...
  • @talkopan Tal Kopan on x
This case always seemed more complicated than initial reports let on. This arrest reinforces that: https://www.sfchronicle.com/ ...
  • @kaivanshroff Kaivan Shroff on x
Tragic story but the record must be corrected. All those tech bros tried to blame the murder of Cash App Bob Lee on progressivism in San Francisco (basically tried to imply a homeless person did it). Now we know police have arrested a tech exec in connection with the stabbing.
  • @alexblagg Alex Blagg on x
we can't keep ignoring the what's happening in the streets of SF. the blight was bad enough, but now it's become deadly. the rampant tech bro problem must be cleaned up once and for all https://twitter.com/...
  • @demianbulwa Demian Bulwa on x
San Francisco police have arrested a fellow technology executive and associate of Bob Lee in connection with the April 4 stabbing of the CashApp founder, Mission Local's @EskSF first reported. https://www.sfchronicle.com/ ...
  • @islivingston Ian Livingston on x
Huh maybe tech executives are the real danger in San Francisco https://twitter.com/...
  • @talkwordy Brian J. White on x
wow so the rich pseudo-liberals of san francisco spent the last week using this murder of a tech exec to attack their city's marginalized people and now the police arrest one of his friends, another tech person. cool. https://www.nytimes.com/...
  • @karaswisher Kara Swisher on x
“The rush to judgment by tech luminaries such as Elon Musk & colleagues of Mr. Lee, a well-known figure in Silicon Valley, had managed to be both inaccurate and damaging to San Francisco, which has been straining to rebound from the coronavirus pandemic.” https://www.nytimes.com/…
  • @pt Parker on x
To everybody who responded to this tragedy by regurgitating your priors, I hope you will be big enough to admit your mistake, and join me in calling for a complete ban on workaholic tech entrepreneurs who own boats and BMWs to avoid future murders like this. https://twitter.com/.…
  • @rschooley Schooley on x
Not exactly the scenario the right has been pushing on this crime. https://twitter.com/...
  • @sarahnemerson Sarah Emerson on x
Nima Momeni, the tech entrepreneur arrested in connection with the killing of Cash App's Bob Lee, partied hard, worked late (friends called him “Dracula"), liked sports cars and boats (still parked outside his apartment this AM). @cfarivar and I report: https://www.forbes.com/...
  • @jarjoh Jarred on x
It'll be interesting to see whether any of the techies eager to politicize Lee's death and blame the previous DA want to retract their statements... https://twitter.com/...

Not the narrative from some on Twitter, who jumped to conclusions ahead of the facts. Still, a terrible tragedy.

bob lee's death was upheld as proof that san francisco has gone to hell and become a lawless wasteland dominated by murderous street urchins. yeah so anyway, https://twitter.com/...

Cops have arrested a *fellow tech executive* in the murder of Bob Lee??!? That's going to change a lot of peoples narratives... https://www.sfchronicle.com/ ...

Well that turns out to be...not what people were pretty insistent in painting it as. https://www.sfchronicle.com/ ...
  • @davetroy Dave Troy on x
Not shockingly, it seems as though Bob Lee and his killer knew each other and got into an altercation. Doesn't fit the “lawless SF” narrative (which is unsupported by stats) but hey, I'm sure this won't stop Sacks and friends from spinning this way. https://missionlocal.org/...
  • @kimzetter Kim Zetter on x
This wasn't the twist I was expecting. San Francisco police have arrested another tech executive for the killing of Cash App founder Bob Lee. Everyone was quick to blame SF's growing street crime for the murder but suspect is fellow exec whom Lee knew https://missionlocal.org/...
  • @mat Mat Honan on x
The blame-the-homeless tech elites that rushed to politicize Bob Lee's murder should feel ashamed. I'm sure they won't, but they should. https://twitter.com/...

A tech exec was the assailant?! Based on the initial response to the news, I would have thought only poor people commit crimes. https://twitter.com/...

We all knew this was a person who knew him, but SF rich folks & police supporting legislators took the opportunity to call for “bringing back lynchings” & getting “tougher on homeless people”. https://twitter.com/...

“Lee's death was packaged in the media and on social media into a highlight reel of recent San Francisco misfortunes and crimes... This manner of coverage, however, does not capture the actual lived experience of the vast majority of San Franciscans.” https://twitter.com/...
  • @juliacarriew Julia Carrie Wong on x
“A chorus of influential voices portrayed this killing as part and parcel of a city awash in violent crime. While Lee is one of a dozen homicide victims in SF this year, his is the only killing that has garnered national coverage — or, in most cases, even cursory local coverage.”…
  • @nycsouthpaw @nycsouthpaw on x
some actual reporting, at last https://twitter.com/...
  • @nycsouthpaw @nycsouthpaw on x
As the story notes, the narrative of a random street crime never fit the public facts very well. But that didn't stop some of the worst people in the world from running with it for a week.
  • @markmilian Mark Milian on x
Horrific murder that also undermines the popular narrative of tech vs. SF crime if it was a tech guy killing a tech guy https://missionlocal.org/...
  • @mattrosoff Matt Rosoff on x
To be clear: Crime in SF is a problem. It's a big city. I've been a victim of theft. I have friends who've been mugged and worse. But it's not an out of control lawless insane asylum like it's often portrayed. A pretty normal city, mostly.
  • @squidllama @squidllama on x
