Amazon refreshes its $150 Echo Show 8 with a new design, a centered camera, a smart home hub, Spatial Audio, and a home screen that changes based on proximity

TechCrunch Brian Heater

Context & Ripple Effects

Amazon’s Echo Show line had already been iterated around cameras and Alexa security features in the 2021 Echo Show 8 and 5 update. This refresh combines another camera repositioning with smart-home control and a proximity-responsive interface in the same midpriced display.

It follows Amazon’s broader 2023 Echo-device update cycle, which also included the lower-cost Echo Pop and updated Echo Show 5. The significance is less a new device category than a denser set of household functions in the Echo Show 8.

First-order effects

  • Echo Show 8 buyers get a $150 display with a centered camera, built-in smart-home hub, Spatial Audio and a home screen that changes with proximity.
  • Amazon makes the Echo Show 8 a more direct control point for both video communication and connected-home interactions.

Second-order effects

  • The added hub raises the value of compatible smart-home devices and puts pressure on rival displays and hubs to match a single-device setup.
  • Proximity-aware presentation shifts the product’s differentiation toward context-sensitive software, rather than incremental display or speaker specifications alone.

Third-order effects

  • If Amazon continues to combine interface awareness, communications hardware and home control, smart displays could increasingly compete as the household’s ambient computing layer rather than as voice-assistant accessories.
  • That shift may make interoperability and user control over camera- and presence-driven features more consequential product differentiators, though the corpus does not establish how broadly such features will be adopted.

The trend: This is one step in the move toward ambient home devices that adapt their interface and control role to a user’s presence.

And the other shoe has dropped, with at least one new subscription.  If you want your Echo Show to be as good as a Google display for photos, you're gonna have to pay.  —  [image]

Ok, so we're seeing Amazon's attempt at giving Alexa more ChatGPT-like capabilities. I'm not sure this is something people want from Alexa — for it to be *more* chatty.
