Google Pixel Watch 2 review: battery lasts all day, better Fitbit integration, health, and stress tracking, but the screen is fragile and there's only one size

The Verge Victoria Song

Context & Ripple Effects

The second Pixel Watch addresses two weaknesses identified in the first Pixel Watch review: battery life and limited health features. Google’s launch positioned the new model around 24-hour battery life, faster charging, and an improved heart-rate sensor, making Fitbit integration central rather than ancillary.

The review shows that those improvements materially strengthen the product, but its single-size design and fragile display remain practical constraints. Later coverage of a Pixel Watch 3 offered in 41mm and 45mm sizes suggests Google treated fit and display usability as product-line issues to resolve.

First-order effects

  • Pixel Watch 2 becomes a more credible all-day wearable for Android users through better battery performance and deeper Fitbit-led health and stress tracking.
  • The fragile screen and only one case size narrow its appeal for buyers who prioritize durability or need a larger fit.

Second-order effects

  • Wear OS rivals face a clearer baseline: battery endurance, charging convenience, and health-tracking software must work together, not as separate selling points.
  • Google’s tighter Fitbit integration raises the value of its health-software layer, while hardware compromises leave room for competitors to differentiate on screen protection, sizing, and battery life.

Third-order effects

  • Smartwatch competition is likely to shift toward integrated health platforms paired with dependable daily hardware; sensor and software gains will not fully offset weak ergonomics or durability.
  • If Google continues to iterate, the category may increasingly segment by fit and display size as well as health features, rather than relying on a single universal watch design.

The trend: Pixel Watch 2 is part of the broader shift from feature-led smartwatches toward health-centric devices whose success depends on both software integration and all-day hardware usability.

My Pixel Watch 2 review.  It's the rare sequel that's better than the original — and I liked many of the new updates.  I just wish repairability was better for the screen because I truly have no idea how my first review unit ended up that badly scratched up. https://www.theverge.…

@MaxWinebach Text sucks on round display. Round smartwatches are dumb.

@MaxWinebach I agree that the circular design is better looking. But, the usability tradeoffs are so high that it will never be worth it to me. Glad Apple is staying rectangular.

@SnazzyLabs Maybe but I've used quite a bit of round smart watches and never really had a complaint
