Analysis: X throttles traffic to Patreon, WhatsApp, and at times Messenger by 2.5 seconds on average; Patreon creators say doing so undermines their livelihood

The Markup

Context & Ripple Effects

The findings extend a recent pattern: data had already indicated that X was reducing distribution of New York Times links among influential users through reduced sharing of New York Times links. This report identifies a different mechanism—added load time—and targets that include a creator-payment destination and major messaging services.

The stakes are especially direct for Patreon because creators depend on referrals reaching membership pages. Patreon's earlier Memberful newsletter feature also shows its effort to give subscription businesses tools beyond any one social referral source.

First-order effects

  • Links from X to Patreon, WhatsApp, and sometimes Messenger take roughly 2.5 seconds longer to load on average, adding immediate friction for users leaving X.
  • For Patreon creators, the delay can reduce the effectiveness of posts intended to turn X attention into memberships, directly undermining a key referral path.

Second-order effects

  • Patreon and affected messaging services have a stronger incentive to diversify acquisition and engagement channels rather than rely on X referrals.
  • The earlier evidence of lower sharing of New York Times links suggests external destinations must account for both reduced distribution and slower click-throughs when assessing X as a traffic source.

Third-order effects

  • If platforms can selectively alter outbound-link performance, latency becomes a practical form of distribution control alongside ranking and moderation decisions.
  • The broader effect could be a more fragmented referral market, in which creators, publishers, and services invest in owned audiences and direct channels to reduce exposure to platform-controlled traffic.

The trend: This is one instance of social platforms treating outbound referral flows—and even loading speed—as levers of ecosystem power.

I learned from being a part of a red-team exercise at Twitter, looking at adult-content creators monetization, a couple of years ago that the platform was critical to, and directly affects the livelihoods of these content creators.  Without an alternative they're stuck with X.

Creators should seriously consider moving off the platform.  However at least one large group of creators on X doesn't have many options.  X is, as Twitter was, the only major social media platform that allows adult content (@tumblr sort of but not really), which is great for an …

NEW: We recently reported on Twitter/X's throttling of links to competitors' sites via its t.co link shortener.  We built a tool for readers to test these links for themselves.  They found some!  —  Our bot alerted us to three new competitors that are being throttled: Patreon, an…

The deadbird site is now throttling links to Patreon, WhatsApp, and Messenger, according to @themarkup's crowdsourced analysis.  —  This latest evidence of interference with speech means nothing to Big Journalism, of course. …
