Reddit kills Community Points, started in 2020 as a blockchain-based way to reward creators and developers, citing the regulatory environment and scaling issues

TechCrunch Morgan Sung

Context & Ripple Effects

Reddit had already been simplifying its recognition systems, including a planned sunset of coins and awards in mid-2023. It then introduced a Contributor Program tied to karma and gold, shifting incentives toward a platform-operated payment model.

The end of Community Points removes a separate blockchain-based layer from that broader redesign of how Reddit recognizes and rewards participation.

First-order effects

  • Community Points users and the communities that used them lose the blockchain-based reward mechanism; Reddit no longer has to operate it amid the cited regulatory and scaling constraints.
  • Reddit’s remaining contributor incentives become more concentrated in its own karma, gold, and verified-user systems.

Second-order effects

  • Community moderators and contributors must rely more heavily on Reddit’s centrally managed reward tools rather than community-specific token mechanics.
  • The move makes the newer Contributor Program a more important test of whether conventional platform incentives can sustain participation without blockchain infrastructure.

Third-order effects

  • If platforms continue replacing tokenized rewards with native payment and recognition systems, creator monetization may favor products with clearer policy control and easier operational scaling.
  • The episode illustrates a durable tension between programmable, community-level incentives and the compliance and governance requirements of large consumer platforms.

The trend: Large platforms are narrowing experimental token-based incentive systems in favor of centrally governed rewards that they can scale and administer more directly.

did Reddit have an ICO or profit from this? or it was just them trying out decentralization and some redards started to gamble on community points? i'm just trying to understand unless the token had another purpose than redeeming for gifts, then why did people gamble on it?

In 2020 Techcrunch was running articles about how it was the “year of community”, but since then we've seen many of these companies lay off their community teams, shutdown products, and overall decrease investment in community. sad
