The challenge with an LLM is making it so stuff like schedule a reminder, which Siri does well now, in the same mode as being conversational.  I imagine they also don't want it to say wrong stuff.  Also it's not clear this stuff is easy on the battery done local.

Great article.  I agree: Apple has a shot to (finally) fix Siri using “Local AI” (on-device LLMs).  It could perfectly mesh their focus on privacy and custom silicon while avoiding more complicated issues with LLMs.

The data is clear - Apple is the market and perception leader in every category that matters.  But developments in Large Language Models have presented the first significant threat to Apple's hegemony in decades.  Tech Threads https://joanwestenberg.com/...

Apple should call their LLM or local system “Core”

Calling it: Apple is the biggest player in AI in 2024.

Apple will surely make an AI play, BUT they will not call it AI in any of their marketing.  No Siri Bob Instead, look out for Apple Intelligence.

Idle speculation: - Siri and Safari search replaced with local LLM that runs on your next next gen iPhone - iLLM 😂 obv it won't be called that - iLLM answers 80% of what you ask, the rest it farms out to mega Apple-hosted LLM - Apple builds this on an open source LLM of course...
