Open-source GameCube and Wii emulator Dolphin is not coming to the App Store, as Apple does not allow JIT recompilers on iOS, likely due to security concerns

OatmealDome

Context & Ripple Effects

Apple’s new global allowance for game emulators opened an App Store channel in principle, but Dolphin exposes a key boundary: approval of an app category does not override iOS runtime restrictions.

Dolphin has already faced distribution constraints elsewhere, including its abandoned Steam release amid Nintendo’s stance on emulation. The iOS limitation adds a platform-policy obstacle distinct from that earlier storefront dispute.

First-order effects

  • Dolphin remains unavailable through Apple’s App Store because its JIT-based approach conflicts with iOS rules, leaving iPhone and iPad users without that official distribution route.
  • Apple’s emulator-policy change therefore benefits only emulators that can operate within its permitted runtime model; Dolphin’s developers must forgo the store or materially alter the software.

Second-order effects

  • Emulator developers targeting iOS must prioritize interpreter-based or otherwise compliant architectures, potentially trading performance or feature parity for App Store access.
  • The case makes Apple’s emulator-policy opening less uniform than it first appeared: developers must assess both content-category rules and lower-level execution constraints before committing to an iOS launch.

Third-order effects

  • If iOS maintains strict limits on dynamic code execution, mobile software distribution will continue to favor products designed around platform-governed runtimes rather than portable desktop codebases.
  • The longer-running pattern is that emulator availability depends on two separate gatekeepers—platform technical policy and rights-holder pressure—so a change in one does not guarantee broad distribution.

The trend: Game-emulator access is expanding selectively, with storefront permissions increasingly bounded by the security and runtime controls of mobile platforms.

Apple fans: Governments need to stop regulating Apple and trying to break my beloved walled garden!  Third party app stores will do nothing for me!  😡 Also Apple fans: Omg, I get to use emulators on my phone now?  🥰

It's a relaxed Saturday morning and I am reading through @rileytestut announcement about AltStore PAL.  “Not all apps are rejected for interesting reasons; sometimes people just want to make cool things that don't fully align with Apple's goals.  Our hope with AltStore is to give…

Anyone working on a Pippin emulator?  Think it would pass app review?  It's definitely a retro console, but you'd have to redistribute Apple source code 🤔 https://en.wikipedia.org/...

This year, we discovered from the James Web Telescope that the galaxy was much older and larger than we had expected. Even less expected, this year Apple has allowed emulators in the app store. Exciting times.

Apple was pressured by regulators to allow game emulators on iOS and now the most popular app is a game emulator with a 4.9 star rating. Remember this when people claim Apple restrictions on what you can do on your phone to protect their app store revenue doesn't harm consumers. …

The GameCube and Wii Emulator - Dolphin Emulator, won't be coming to be the Apple's App Store After all. The dev explains that without JIT, the dolphin emulator barely runs on IPhone 15 Pro. And Apple rejected their request to use JIT as well. #Apple #AppStore #iOS17 #Java [image…

So it would be pointless to bring the Dolphin Emulator to the AppStore. Since games won't run at playable speeds, and the users would keep complaining them about it. So basically, it's not worth the hassle. Unless Apple allows JIT to be used in Emulators, Emulators like-

Unfortunately, the Dolphin browser won't be available on the App Store due to Apple's restrictions on third-party browsers. #DolphinBrowser #AppStore #TechNews https://oatmealdome.me/...

Dolphin, and other Emulators that require JIT - like PS2, Wii U, PSVita etc. won't be coming to the AppStore. We can still expect Emulators for PSP, PS1 and some Sega consoles though.. Also 3DS emulator (Folium) will also be on AppStore. Might not work as great though..
