Peloton CEO Barry McCarthy steps down, as the company lays off ~15% of its workforce, or ~400 people, its fifth cut since its 2021 peak, when it had 8,600 staff

The Verge

Context & Ripple Effects

This is Peloton’s second CEO transition in a little over two years: Barry McCarthy took over after co-founder John Foley stepped down alongside an earlier, much larger workforce reduction and a cancelled factory plan. The latest cuts extend a retrenchment from the company’s 2021 staffing peak rather than marking a one-off reset.

Peloton is simultaneously positioning new AI workout tracking, a Cross Training Series, and higher-priced hardware as elements of a comeback. That makes the leadership and staffing change consequential for execution of the revised product strategy.

First-order effects

  • About 400 employees lose their jobs, shrinking Peloton’s operating capacity in its fifth reduction since the 2021 peak.
  • McCarthy’s departure puts responsibility for the product-and-pricing comeback plan on a new CEO and leadership team.

Second-order effects

  • The remaining organization will have to prioritize among AI features, new hardware, and customer operations with fewer staff, raising the importance of near-term product execution.
  • Repeated cuts and another leadership handoff may make it harder for Peloton to present a stable turnaround narrative to customers and partners as it introduces higher-priced equipment.

Third-order effects

  • If the pattern persists, Peloton’s post-peak reset may become less about restoring its prior scale and more about finding a durable operating model around a narrower product lineup and workforce.
  • The episode reflects the broader challenge for connected-hardware businesses: demand-led expansion can leave companies balancing recurring product investment against the need to reduce fixed costs when growth expectations change.

The trend: Connected-fitness companies are moving from peak-era expansion toward leaner, product-led operating models that must justify both hardware investment and organizational scale.

PTON Earnings Call: TBH, I don't expect much from the call, but I'll start with these. The store closures (red), the active (blue), and the 3rd party partnerships (purple). And, PTON's headcount compared to peers. 🧵 [image]

$PTON @ $2.91 Remember in 2021 when your Twitter growth stock gurus said Apple was stupid to not buy Peloton @ $150/share? Where are those guys now? [image]

App revenue did increase QoQ. As many have stated, why not role out the app internationally. Answer: Unknown. Must be hard, or something. After all, very few apps are offered outside of the US (sarcasm).

Peloton has been a real tragedy. A great product that mistook a temporary windfall from COVID as the new normal and has crashed massively, stock price peak at COVID was $157 versus $3 today. This CEO tried to pivot to content but there's not enough differentiation or money there …
