Sources: Apple is planning one of the most ambitious periods of new products in its history, with a deluge coming in fall 2022 and H1 2023, including M3 Macs

Apple's latest software from WWDC sets the stage for a busy fall 2022 and first half of 2023.  Also: A US Apple store votes …

Bloomberg Mark Gurman

Context & Ripple Effects

Apple had already signaled an unusually broad hardware push for the fall in a January report on its widest planned hardware slate. This report narrows that broad plan by placing M3 Macs within the fall 2022 through first-half 2023 launch window.

The Mac detail matters because it makes the release wave a coordinated portfolio cycle rather than an iPhone-led event alone; later coverage likewise pairs Mac testing with iPhone, AirPods, and Watch launches.

First-order effects

  • Apple’s product teams must coordinate a dense launch calendar spanning fall 2022 and the first half of 2023, with M3 Macs included in the slate.
  • Mac buyers gain a defined expectation that Apple’s next product wave will include refreshed Macs alongside its wider hardware plans.

Second-order effects

  • A Mac launch inside a broader Apple release cycle concentrates marketing and retail attention across several device categories rather than isolating the Mac refresh.
  • Apple’s cadence gives customers weighing a Mac purchase an incentive to time decisions around the stated launch window, tightening the connection between Mac demand and the wider hardware calendar.

Third-order effects

  • The related coverage points to Apple treating Macs as a recurring component of coordinated multi-device launch cycles, rather than as an independent, occasional refresh line.
  • If that pattern persists, Apple’s product roadmap will increasingly be judged on its ability to synchronize updates across its major hardware categories, as reflected in later plans pairing Macs with iPhones, AirPods, and Watches.

The trend: Apple is moving toward denser, coordinated hardware refresh cycles that place Macs alongside its broader consumer-device launch calendar.

Apple is planning a new Apple TV with an A14 chip (up from A12) and a new, larger HomePod with a new display on top and the S8 chip from this fall's new Apple Watch.

Power On: Apple is set to embark on a very busy fall 2022 and first half of 2023. Details on the iPhone 14, new iPads, Apple Watches, HomePod, Apple TV, mixed reality headset, M2 and M3 chips and much more. https://www.bloomberg.com/...

For the M2 Pro/Max MacBook Pros I hope the “2” stands for 2 USB-C ports on the right side

Mac mini with M2 Pro chip should replace the current higher-end Intel configuration as the transition to Apple silicon nears completion. Sounds like the M1 model will also be spec bumped to M2. https://twitter.com/...

Mostly straightforward “replacing the number 1 with 2” spec bumps here, but notable aspects include an M2 Pro configuration for the Mac mini that finally replaces Intel model, an all-new “M2 Extreme” chip for Mac Pro, and 24-inch iMac apparently skipping M2.

Apple in 2023- “iPhone 15 has USB-C, allowing for faster data transfer speeds, faster charging, and supporting a wide range of pre-existing accessories. Using the included lightning adapter, you can continue to use all your favorite lightning accessories”

If Apple's VR/AR headset has an M2 chip and 16GB of RAM as rumoured, it's going to be so far ahead of the Oculus 3. Stuff on it will actually look good.

The Apple Watch Series 8 apparently keeping the same chip that's in the Series 6 and Series 7 is disappointing. Apple Watch needs a boost in battery life and we're unlikely to get anything significant with the same chip.
  • @rsgnl Joe Rossignol on x
Seems like the answer is the iPhone 14 Pro will likely go as low as 1Hz like the Apple Watch, while the iPhone 13 Pro can go as low as 10Hz. This would help to further preserve battery life. https://twitter.com/...

What are the odds an $AAPL headset bombs and convinces the market that Steve and Jony were in fact the only employees capable of real innovation and destroys any notion of Apple making a new device successfully ever again:

Yet another instance.... And yet people still like to say Apple silicon pace isn't slowing down. Lotta good people left for traditional semi companies, startups, and hyperscalers. https://twitter.com/...

Macs could look like this eventually: MacBook Air: M2 (with M1 still available) 13" MacBook Pro: M2 14" and 16" MacBook Pro: M2 Pro + M2 Max Mac mini: M2 + M2 Pro Mac Studio: M2 Max + M2 Ultra Mac Pro: M2 Ultra + “M2 Extreme” @markgurman said a new iMac is unlikely until M3.

@rsgnl @DSCCRoss They could have done it with any OLED iphone but I think they're looking for the 1hz efficiency that'll be in the 14 Pro panel vs 10hz in 13 Pro

My predictions: Fall 2022: Apple TV, HomePod, M2 iPad Pros and redesigned M2 Mac Mini December 2022: “X1/X1 Duo” Mac Pro Spring 2023: M2 Pro Mac mini, M2 Pro/Max MacBook Pros WWDC 2023: either M2 Ultra Mac Studio or iMac Pro. Fall 2023: some M3 Macs Not sure about 15" Air https:/…

@01Core_Ben Facebook currently has a headstart on the hardware, but a gigantic disadvantage in regards to the size of its developers' community. Apple already has millions of iOS developers, and they could leverage this while they catch up on the hardware.
  • @rsgnl Joe Rossignol on x
I'm sure some iPhone 13 Pro users wish Apple would at least give them always-on mode optionally, even at the expense of battery life, but I think Apple generally tries to avoid offering subpar experiences — even optional ones. It's fair to debate that decision!
  • @markgurman Mark Gurman on x
The Apple Watch Series 8 will get an S8 chip that is on par with the current S7, which was the same as the S6. The Series 9 will get an upgraded processor however. The new Watch SE will also get the S8, up from the S5. Series 3 Watch will go away, finally.

@PersianCapital @01Core_Ben Not to mention that the crux of the AR/VR space is usability in real life, something that Apple is simply better at, and that Apple is trying to truly *augment* your current reality, Meta wants to replace it. Ask Gen Z if they want to use Meta or want …

Any reason why the iPhone 13 Pro couldn't get an always-on display from a technical standpoint, @DSCCRoss? They feature ProMotion. Further power efficiency gains from the A16 chip? https://twitter.com/...

@engadget Given the bugs found in the M1 chip, one can only hope.

Apple's upcoming headset will run an M2 chip and 16GB of RAM. Other upcoming M2 devices: new 14/16inch MacBook Pros (Pro and Max), Mac mini (regular and Pro), Mac Pro (Ultra and “Extreme"), iPad Pro (regular).

A little disappointed the Apple Watch SE 2 isn't getting a new design - if the only change is a new chip, I think you're just better off getting the SE 1 that I'm assuming will be $199. I hope they at least give the SE 2 an AOD to justify getting it. https://twitter.com/...
