A deep dive into Apple's plans for the new iPhones and Watches coming this fall, including iPhone 15 Pro with 1.5mm bezels, a step towards a borderless iPhone

Apple is just weeks away from introducing the iPhone 15 and next-generation watches.  The new lineup will mark another stepping stone toward …

Bloomberg Mark Gurman

Context & Ripple Effects

This report frames the iPhone 15 Pro's thinner display borders as an incremental hardware-design step rather than a finished borderless-device milestone. It also ties Apple's phone refresh to its next Apple Watch generation, keeping the fall launch cycle centered on coordinated flagship updates.

Later coverage positioned the same generation around a more assertive premium tier, including an expected high-end price increase and a Pro Max-exclusive periscope lens. That makes the bezel change relevant as another visible reason to differentiate the Pro models.

First-order effects

  • Apple gains a conspicuous iPhone 15 Pro design distinction through reported 1.5mm bezels, while the next Watches broaden the fall refresh beyond phones.
  • Prospective buyers are steered toward the Pro tier for a more modern-looking display, ahead of the broader iPhone 15 and Watch introductions.

Second-order effects

  • A more visibly differentiated Pro design supports Apple's premium segmentation alongside the reported higher-end pricing and camera exclusivity, raising the bar for rival flagships to show similarly tangible upgrades.
  • Display and enclosure choices become more consequential to the iPhone supply chain, because shrinking borders turns component integration and manufacturing yield into product-level differentiators.

Third-order effects

  • If Apple continues making the screen visually dominate the device, smartphone upgrades may increasingly rely on industrial design refinements and tier-exclusive hardware as feature gaps between base and premium models narrow.
  • The pattern points to a more stratified flagship market: manufacturers may reserve the most technically demanding display, camera, and materials changes for higher-priced models, though this report alone cannot establish how durable that split will be.

The trend: This is one data point in the flagship-phone industry's shift toward using premium industrial design and exclusive hardware to sustain higher-end product tiers.

I can't wait to get the iPhone 15 Pro once it's out so I can switch to the US model, the eSIMs and use the regional cellular bands that my current iPhone HK model doesn't support

@codinghorror @mattdarveniza @marcan  —  Even if I were to concede Apple's an evil corp, it'd be irrelevant.  —  Apple sells several hundred million iPhones alone every year, in a highly competitive market.  Repairability has not been a purchase-determining issue for customers at…

The bezel of the iPhone 15 Pro has been shrunk to 1.5mm. Thanks to Apple's LIPO technology, the bezel has become thinner. It was once used for the Apple Watch and will be used for the iPad later. The iPhone will keep this record until Xiaomi 14 is released. [image]

Any estimates on how much lighter the iPhone 15 Pro be with the titanium band? The stainless-steel band is my least favorite feature of the iPhone 14 Pro.

all I care about is that it's lighter and lasts longer, everything else is a bonus

Am I crazy or does the iPhone 15 Pro actually sound like a pretty big upgrade?

The iPhone 15 Pro will get redesigned internally to be more repairable like the iPhone 14. The regular 15 will look like the 14, but get big camera upgrades, USB-C and A16. And more details like what happened to haptic side-buttons, price increases, chips. https://www.bloomberg.c…

This year's Apple Watches will be minor updates focused on faster processors. But here's what you need to know about an all new case material for the Series 9 and the potential of a black titanium option on the Ultra 2. https://www.bloomberg.com/...

NEW: Apple readies the iPhone 15 Pro as a major step towards its dream phone, with 1.5mm ultra-thin bezels, USB-C, titanium band, major camera upgrades, softer corners, new chips, a customizable side button and more. https://www.bloomberg.com/...
