Sources: Apple is working on a foldable, clamshell-design iPhone that could debut as soon as 2026, and reached out to Asian component suppliers in recent months

Apple is working on a foldable iPhone that could be released as early as 2026 and in recent months reached out to suppliers …

The Information

Context & Ripple Effects

This report advances a long-running Apple foldable effort: Apple was previously said to be doing preliminary work on a foldable-screen iPhone, then to have built prototypes of two widthwise-folding models that were still far from production.

Contact with Asian component suppliers is the first reported signal in this coverage of work moving beyond internal prototypes toward supply-chain evaluation. The reported 2026 timing remains contingent rather than a product commitment.

First-order effects

  • Asian component suppliers can begin assessing whether they can meet Apple's requirements for a clamshell foldable, potentially committing engineering and sample-production resources before any production award.
  • Apple gains earlier feedback on component availability, manufacturability, and costs as it determines whether a foldable iPhone can move from prototype work into a launch program.

Second-order effects

  • Suppliers selected for evaluation may gain an advantage in a potential new iPhone component cycle, while rivals that are not engaged face a weaker position if Apple advances the program.
  • A 2026 target would give Apple's existing iPhone supply chain a planning horizon for foldable-specific parts, making component reliability and yield more important procurement criteria.

Third-order effects

  • If Apple converts supplier outreach into production, its scale could make foldable components a more established smartphone supply-chain category rather than a specialized niche.
  • The episode reflects how hardware differentiation is increasingly constrained by whether complex form factors can be manufactured consistently at scale; Apple’s reported timeline leaves that test unresolved.

The trend: Foldable phones are moving from experimental device concepts toward supply-chain qualification, where manufacturing readiness determines which designs can reach mass-market brands.

this would probably be the most expensive iPhone ever and I already want it https://www.theinformation.com/ ...

I don't think Apple should be making a folding phone with current technology; it just adds nothing of value, other than to hit new price points (and Apple needs no help doing that)

@stroughtonsmith agreed, it's a gimmick at best.  I just want them to make the westworld tablet devices when the tech is there.

https://www.theinformation.com/ ... Apple is moving ahead with a foldable iPhone that could launch as early as 2026 and has given the project a formal codename. It's one of a slew of upgrades planned for the iPhone in the coming years. Check out my latest with @QianerLiu for @the…
