Framework says it is raising DDR5 RAM prices to charge $10 per GB, after a price hike earlier in December due to “substantially higher costs” amid the AI boom

Framework’s modular model makes memory a separately priced, customer-visible component: its earlier memory-free Laptop 13 configuration and refurbished DDR4 sales had already separated the base system from upgrade costs. The new pricing therefore exposes a component-market shock directly rather than burying it solely in a finished-PC sticker price.

It follows reports that DDR4, DDR5 and SSD prices had surged and that major PC vendors were preparing customer price increases amid higher DRAM costs. Framework is a smaller but unusually transparent readout of the same supply pressure.

    Our new pricing is as close as we can get to passing through our actual purchase costs for modules from our suppliers and distributors, which means we're absorbing a lot of the cost increase. We have the full detail in our blog post here: https://frame.work/...

    Our suppliers indicate that memory pricing will continue to increase in early 2026. As we shared before, we'll stay transparent on price updates, we will only increase prices to cover cost increases, and we will bring prices back down as costs decrease in the future.

    We're able to hold our current pre-built system pricing and Framework Desktop pricing for now, but expect that we will need to update pricing within the next few weeks. That makes the current Framework Desktop pricing a relative bargain, especially for the 128GB config.

    Memory costs from our suppliers continue to increase, now landing 3-5x higher than a year ago, so we have had to increase DDR5 pricing further to $10/GB for most capacities. This puts us around the cheapest available retail modules, and still far below Apple's $25/GB.
