Run each pass in order; each targets one failure mode. If a pass finds nothing, leave it. Restraint is the highest virtue — a post that's 90% there needs 3 precise edits, not a rewrite. Do not fight a deliberate structure.

Pass 0 — Arrival and finding (run this FIRST; the other passes cannot fix what it catches)

Passes 1–7 all judge the prose. Neither of these does, and both were added on 2026-08-02 after a

set of pieces scored well on texture and voice while carrying headlines — "One Sentence About

Markets", "He Put It Back On" — that meant nothing to anyone who had not been in the room.

  • arrival — Read the headline and first paragraph ONLY. Does a reader who has never heard of

any of these names know who this is about, what happened, and why it is strange? If the answer

requires anything further down, arrival is ≤5. Costs marks: a headline with no proper noun; a

headline resting on a pronoun or on a phrase that resolves only later; an opening that assumes

the reader followed the coverage; a dek describing the PIECE rather than the story. Full marks

look like "In April 2024 OpenAI fired two researchers from its safety team. One of them was

Leopold Aschenbrenner." A name, a date, an event, nothing assumed. This is NOT dumbing down and

must not be rewarded as such — every fact stays, the orientation moves to the front, and a

specialist loses nothing by being told who is under discussion.

Note this cuts against Pass 1's warning about blind leads from the other side: McPhee objects to

hiding the subject for effect, and so does this. Orientation is not withholding.

  • finding — State the finding in one sentence to yourself: it should carry a number, a date and

a source. Then ask what a well-informed reader would have EXPECTED instead. If the piece cannot

imply an answer, it is a competent restatement and finding is ≤4 however good the sentences are.

Score high for a contradiction between two records that both check out, a quantity nobody has

computed, or a thing that did not happen when everything said it should. Score low for recapped

news, or a claim whose support is that it sounds true. A piece can be flawless prose and score 3

here — that is the point. It is the one dimension the writing cannot fix, and the honest response

is to go back to the record, not to the sentences.

Pass 1 — The Promise

Read the lede and the final paragraph back to back.

  • Lede must HOOK with a concrete number/fact/contradiction the reader can't yet interpret — not a summary, not a bare statement of the thesis. Open strong, but don't blow your best material up front: "the fundamental purpose of a narrative's first paragraph is to make the reader continue to the second" (Kramer). Think opening section, not one clever sentence. No cheap withholding — a "blind lead" that hides its subject to unveil it later is "slightly cheap to very cheap… the ears were sticking up from the get-go" (McPhee).
  • Closing must RETURN to that hook and recontextualize it — crystallize, don't extend, don't summarize, don't explain TEXXR. Coming full circle rewards the reader ("symmetry appeals"), but don't give the last word to a quote — it's your piece (Kramer). Then test it: "put your hand over the last paragraph… Where does the piece really end?" — if the paragraph above lands harder, cut the tail; don't bury your ending (Clark).
  • Lede + closing alone should form a complete arc.

Pass 2 — The Middle

Every <h2> section must ARGUE — the reader believes something new after it. Cut furniture ("Background"/"Context" that just catches the reader up; fold it into the argument as one sentence or an <aside class="context">). Kill chronological filler (a timeline is only justified when the sequence itself is the insight). A parade of 3 examples proving one point → keep the strongest, cut the rest. Tension test: the reader shouldn't go more than two sections without a surprise or reframe. Don't fight a deliberate structure — good structure "arises from within the material… it is not imposed on it" and is "about as visible as someone's bones," and a strong one "causes people to want to keep turning pages" (McPhee). Structure is "the deliberate and purposeful sequence of the reader's experience" (Kramer): cut anything not advancing that sequence.

Pass 3 — The Telescope

Delete every trace of tool/methodology narration: "TEXXR's knowledge graph shows…", "our data…", "using X we can see…", "the edge profile reveals…", "this is what TEXXR is built to do". State findings directly — the analyst is the authority, not the platform.

Pass 4 — Pull quotes

Each <p class="pull-quote"> must state an IMPLICATION the surrounding prose doesn't say outright (the inferential leap the evidence supports). If it restates nearby text, cut it or rewrite it to the "so what". 0-2 max.

Pass 5 — Sentences

Cut throat-clearers ("It's worth noting that", "Interestingly"). Cut weakening qualifiers ("arguably", "in a sense", "one could say") — argue it or drop it. Cut echo sentences (two sentences, one point → keep the stronger). Fix agency-obscuring passive ("The acquisition was blocked" → "The FTC blocked the acquisition") — but passive is legitimate when the receiver of the action is the true subject ("be passive-aggressive… use passive verbs to showcase the victim of action," Clark). Split >2-clause sentences. Remove "Now let's look at…"/"Turning to…" transitions.

Then tighten: omit needless words — "a sentence should contain no unnecessary words, a paragraph no unnecessary sentences, for the same reason that a drawing should have no unnecessary lines and a machine no unnecessary parts" (Strunk & White #17). When a line still feels padded, halve it: "get rid of half the words… then half of what's left" (Krug). Swap wordy stock phrases for the plain word (APA: "at the present time" → "now"; "for the purpose of" → "to"). Order words for emphasis — "place strong words at the beginning and at the end" (Clark). Read-aloud test: anything that sounds like writing, not speaking, is too padded.

Pass 5b — Sentence texture (HARD CONSTRAINTS — enforce, do not merely suggest)

This is the objective craft gate. It fixes recurring voice tics at the sentence level WITHOUT touching structure, the argument spine, or the open/close bookend — leave those alone.

1. Clipped-fragment closers are a brake pedal, not a house beat. A short punch after a long sentence emphasizes because it is rare (Clark: "A short sentence slams on the brakes"). Allow AT MOST 2 in the whole piece — reserve them for the lede and the final line. Every other paragraph that ends on a fragment or clipped one-liner ("The ratio is the story." / "2028 is not 2026." / "It strengthens the thesis of allocation.") gets resolved into a normal sentence. Two consecutive sections that both land on a punch: the middle one loses.

2. The grammatical subject should be a player, not an abstraction. Scan each paragraph's subject: a person/company/thing (SK Hynix, Nvidia, the DDR5 buyer) or a nominalization ("The relevant substitution occurs across the industrial system", "The supply response is material", "The scale of forward claims sharpened the mechanism")? This is Clark's ladder of abstraction: "at the bottom are bloody knives and rosary beads… at the top are words like freedom and literacy… beware the middle, where bureaucracy lurks" (teachers become "full-time equivalents"). Top of the ladder tells, the bottom shows, and the abstraction-subject is "the muddle of the middle" (Kramer). Rewrite so the player acts — "strong verbs create action, save words, and reveal the players" (Clark).

3. Ban verbal false limbs. Delete "is not X in the [adjective] sense", "in the economically useful sense", "by construction", and kin — padding that lends "an appearance of symmetry" (Orwell). Say the concrete thing instead.

4. State the thesis at full strength ONCE. The central claim is proven a single time; every later mention must carry a NEW fact, not re-assert it (Clark: "Do not repeat a distinctive word unless you intend a specific effect"). Keep the sharpest phrasing, cut the echoes, and spend the reclaimed space on the concrete stake the piece underplays (e.g. what a downstream buyer actually does differently now).

5. Every hedge must guard a sourced fact. "reportedly / roughly / estimated / about" protecting a primary-research claim are NON-NEGOTIABLE — keep them. Cut hedges that only soften rhetoric, and cut a number restated for weight ("16 points above… about 1.3× as concentrated" — keep one, not both). Wordiness forces the reader to sort noise from idea (APA).

6. Get the name of the dog. Where the piece gestures at a category ("a major chipmaker", "several investors", "the market"), dig for the concrete and specific — the named company, the actual figure, the dated event: "details that appeal to the senses… make you see" (Clark/Conrad). One precise detail beats three abstractions.

7. Cut the machine tells. A model reaches for these when it has nothing sharper; each reads as generated and each has a plain fix. Binary contrast / negative listing — "It's not X, it's Y", "Not a tool. Not a feature. A shift." — state the positive claim; the contrast almost never carries weight. Faux-insight setup — "What most people miss", "Here's the thing", "The uncomfortable truth is" — delete the throat-clear, lead with the claim it delays. Colon reveal — "The best part: it compounds." — resolve into a sentence. Importance puffery — "marks a pivotal moment", "a watershed", "fundamentally reshapes" — show the stake with a fact or cut it; asserting significance is not establishing it. Weasel attribution — "experts say", "studies show", "many believe" — name the source or drop the claim (see #5). Decorative vocabularydelve, streamline, harness, empower, paradigm shift, transformative, cutting-edge, seamless used as filler; prefer the plain verb. Register-aware: a word that carries a real, sourced meaning stays (financial leverage, statistical robust). (Pattern set adapted from petergyang/no-ai-slop.)

Pass 6 — Components

Use a component only where it beats prose, and sparingly (budget: 1-2 stat callouts, ≤1 data table, 0-2 pull quotes, 2-4 embeds). Promote a buried big number to <div class="stat">; two contrasted numbers to <div class="stat-row">; an order-matters sequence to <ul class="timeline">. Never two components in a row without intervening prose. Don't over-component into a showroom.

Pass 7 — Metadata & SEO

  • Title: under 60 chars, a specific insight (not "The State of X"), makes someone click. Balance a creative hook with a substantive fact — "a creative title balanced with a substantive subtitle" (APA). The title's job is to "show people you have something for them and induce them to read on" (Lant, Cash Copy): reader-centered and specific (the number, the name, the stake), never abstract "muddle of the middle."
  • Subtitle: states the constellation with a specific fact/number, works standalone on social.
  • Dek: 5-10 words, keyword-bearing, names characters + stakes + why-now.
  • Tags: all significant entities + thematic tags + the author name.
  • Excerpt: 5 dense sentences (hook, scale, pattern, tension, therefore), ~400 chars.
  • Add seo_title / seo_description if the editorial title is too abstract for search.
  • Internal links (see format.md "Links"): article refs <a href="/ARTICLE_ID"> and post

cross-refs <a href="/posts/SLUG">, plus a few high-relevance links on first mention to

entity pages (/entity/name), a topic pillar (/topic/slug), or a concept (/concepts#slug).

Aim for ~2–5 internal links per post, editorial not salesy; nudge a post that has none.
