The Wire has quietly slipped this bit into their apology statement. They were deceived by a member of the Meta investigation team. So essentially, their reporter created a fake story and ran with it. How many more stories by him are fake? https://twitter.com/...

The Wire

The Wire apologizes, saying technical evidence should have been independently verified and that it was deceived “by a member of our Meta investigation team”

Last week, The Wire formally retracted its Meta stories after conducting an internal review of the technical source material used … Tweets: @amitmalviya , @thewire_in , @caseynewto...

Imagine beating your chest about fake news every other day and your reporter creates sources and evidence and mails and apps from his desk, to stitch up a fake story to confirm your biases. And you run with it. And think just an apology would do. This is just deep set rot.

Also they say they will provide more editorial scrutiny on ‘complex technical topics’. Because tech bros will call it out. Other topics on communalism and fascism and associated outrage, does not need such filters. Mahaul topics can slip through any crack.

They have published and defended a fabricated report. Tried to tarnish a persons reputation. And are hiding this fact in the fine print while saying editorial standards were not rigorous. A whole story (possibly more) with all evidence manufactured, is not just an editorial slip
