An analysis of nearly 4,000 public datasets finds that over 90% of AI training datasets came from Europe and North America, and fewer than 4% came from Africa

I tried the viral Lensa AI portrait app, and got lots and lots of nudes. I know AI image generation models are full of sexist and racist biases, but this one really hit home. My latest story for @techreview https://www.technologyreview.com/ ...

When a female reporter tried Lensa, many of her 100 avatars were “pornified”, with 16 topless; her male peers got avatars of astronauts, warriors, and the like

When I tried the new viral AI avatar app Lensa, I was hoping to get results similar to some of my colleagues at MIT Technology Review.Tweets:@melissahei,@originalspin, and@tariqkri...

The White House wants Americans to know: The age of AI accountability is coming. A new AI Bill of Rights includes five key protections Americans should be entitled to, including data privacy and protection from algorithmic discrimination. https://www.technologyreview.com/ ...

The White House's new AI Bill of Rights, including helping opt out of algorithmic decision-making, is nonbinding and so will have little impact on companies

The draft's tenets include allowing citizens to opt out of algorithmic decision-making, which could reshape federal government—but not the private sector.

Models that are trained on personal data pose a “ticking time bomb” for privacy online, and opens up a plethora of security and legal risks, experts warn. The bigger the model, the bigger the risk. https://www.technologyreview.com/ ...

A look at the privacy concerns raised by OpenAI's GPT-3, Google's LaMDA, Meta's OPT-175B, and other large language models trained on troves of personal data

Large language models are trained on troves of personal data hoovered from the internet.  So I wanted to know: What does it have on me? Tweets: @garymarcus , @hypervisible , @eilee...

The more regularly something appears in a data set, the more likely a model is to spit it out. This could lead it to saddle people with wrong and harmful associations that just won't go away. Exhibit A: Meta's model said @marietjeschaake is a terrorist. https://twitter.com/...

Turns out I'm a nobody, according to GPT-3. But the model has a lot of information on @techreview's EIC @mat. (Some of it is true, some of it is nonsense.) https://twitter.com/...

So what are the chances the EU will really ban the use of facial recognition in public places from law enforcement? It's possible... but! Thread 🧵 1/7 https://www.politico.eu/...

EU Parliament overwhelmingly votes for a non-binding resolution banning police use of facial recognition and AI-powered predictive policing

The European Parliament today called for a ban on police use of facial recognition technology in public places, and on predictive policing … Source: European Parliament .

Bans on live facial recognition etc are supported by power players such as European data protection watchdogs. The GDPR is sacred in Brussels and the data protection/mass surveillance argument is a strong and influential one. 4/7

The European Parliament has just shown the majority of MEPs think the AI Act should go further. @brandobenifei, the bill's lead negotiator in the EP, will likely manage to include a total ban in his amendments. Momentum is growing to also ban its use from private companies. 3/7

Parliament's best bet is to propose as strong and sweeping bans as possible to allow room for negotiation. Maybe it'll succeed, but a moratorium, extra strict vetting or narrowing the use cases for law enforcement even further is a more likely final compromise. 7/7

The European Commission, which drafts laws, has proposed that the bloc's AI regulation, the AI Act, restricts the use of remote biometric identification in public places from law enforcement, unless it is to fight serious crime such as terrorism or kidnappings. 2/7
