Accessibility consultants say the video game industry's accessibility advancements, which gained momentum in 2020, have slowed down due to cutbacks

I'm always sceptical of publishers and platform holders being the ones to handle media preservation. It's no replacement for external independant preservation . That said, I'm pleased by the news Xbox are making a dedicated push here.

Emails: Xbox President Sarah Bond forms a game preservation team, and reiterates that the next Xbox should be “the biggest technical leap ever in a generation”

The backward compatibility program will continue to future Xbox hardware.  —  What you need to know

Really interesting reading these leaked emails about Microsoft wanting to aquire Nintendo. I find the part about how “Nintendo's future isn'te on Nintendo Hardware” really interesting, given their hardware is selling a lot better than Microsoft's :P https://www.eurogamer.net/...

FTC v. Microsoft: new documents detail an Xbox Series X refresh in 2024, codenamed Brooklin, including a new controller and cylindrical, disc-less design

Microsoft is planning to refresh its Xbox Series X console in 2024 with an all-new design and features.

It feels to me like Spencer fundamentally misunderstands Nintendo here. They view themselves as a toy maker. They're a creator of weird novelties, silly games, and unexpected projects. An Xbox aquired Nintendo probably wouldn't be releasing Labo kits and AR kart racing toys.

PS not letting PS4 controllers be used for PS5 games doesn't give me confidence they'll do the Xbox thing and ensure this controller works on future hardware and isn't made obsolete next gen. I hope to be proven wrong.

Sony unveils Project Leonardo, a PS5 accessibility controller kit with circular gamepads, for use on its own or with DualSense; pricing and release are TBC

Quietly, one of the cool overlooked parts of this is that it lets you use up to “two accessibility controllers and one dualsense as a single virtual controller”. This sounds like Co-Pilot support coming to PS, as we saw in horizon: Forbidden West last year, system wide.

My main question, which I am going to try and ask PR today, is whether you can also, for example, following this future update, use two dualsenses (without an accessibility controller) as one virtual controller, to mimmick the functionality seen on Xbox in this regard.

Quick fire thoughts RE PlayStation accessibility controller. Super glad it supports 3.5mm peripherals. Large face buttons included for so many controller inputs not just A/B is fab. Seems to stealth announce Co-Pilot support system wide which is great. Shame it's proprietary. https://twitter.com/...

Sony is building a better PlayStation 5 controller with Project Leonardo, a kit that promises to make games easier to play for people with limited motor control.

Microsoft basically just purchased a company mired in stories of abuse. If their first move is not to make serious change, a lot of that bad sentiment might start sticking to Microsoft too. Kotick remaining as CEO post purchase is a bad sign for meaningful change.

Microsoft plans to buy Activision Blizzard for $68.7B in cash, or $95/share, closing in FY '23; Activision's stock, which closed last week at $65.39, jumps 27%+

Legendary games, immersive interactive entertainment and publishing expertise accelerate growth in Microsoft's Gaming business across mobile, PC, console and cloud.

@ABetterABK the charitable reading is Phil Spencer's comments about being deeply troubled by the ABK abuse reports and reevaluating their relationship = “We could buy them and force them to fix things”. I am not in any way confident in that being how this plays out.

If Microsoft is making this purchase, knowing the state of the company RE ongoing lawsuits and incredibly low consumer and worker trust, I hope that means they have a plan to institute actual change, BUT I am not holding my breath for that.

So, that Microsoft purchase of Activision Blizzard King huh? My main response - What do the striking ABK workers think? What steps will Microsoft implement to see change at the company? Will Kotick face consequences? Will this change monetisation / working practices?

I feel like a good start would be Microsoft stepping in to basically give the striking @ABetterABK workers what they are asking for. That would be a very good start on showing some intent to improve things. Not a perfect answer, but would be a strong first step.
