Their slippery slope willingness to compromise on what seemed to be a long time principled stance on not pre-announcing pre-launch products tells me everything I need to know about what is happening inside Apple right now.

Sources: an exec overseeing Siri told staff the delays were ugly, made worse by Apple publicly promoting the new features, and it's unclear when they will ship

Tough, but I'm not super surprised.  I think the appetite to spend precious engineering resources on speculative hardware platforms is significantly reduced from where it was a few years back.  It's not just about building the app, you need to support it and maintain feature parity over time.  Much easier on mobile and even TVs now with great cross platform dev tools, but this is entirely new OS/platform, even if it does run iPhone/iPad apps.

Apple opens pre-orders for the Vision Pro, which has an M2 chip with an 8-core CPU and a 10-core GPU, and comes with 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB storage options

Apple today finally shared additional tech specs for its Vision Pro headset following the start of pre-orders in the United States.

I think their goal has to be to make Threads the best client to consume/create content.  Compete on the quality of the experience, not network lock in.  Which is of course great for customers.  Then they can pull in ads, offer premium features at a price, do sponsored tags/posts, etc. …

Mark Zuckerberg says Meta is testing making posts from Threads accounts “available on Mastodon and other services that use the ActivityPub protocol”

I've been as big a Facebook critic as anybody, but this is a good thing.  And reflects that we're entering a new era of the open web, with a chance for things to be more interestin...

It seems so strange to me that (if this ruling stands, I assume they will appeal) Google may be required to offer 3P App stores, while Apple will not?  Seems like either Google wins on Appeal, or Apple soon is also required to offer alternative App Stores.  For the record, more appstores = better for customers.

The jury in Epic v. Google finds that Google has monopoly power in the Android app distribution and in-app billing services markets; Google plans to appeal

Three years after Fortnite maker Epic Games sued Apple and Google for allegedly running illegal app store monopolies, Epic has a win.

The consumer Messaging space has some interesting storylines/developments.  * The RCS/iMessage/Android saga btw Google, Apple, and 3P apps * US Growth and i18n success of WhatsApp * Meta overall cross-product messaging CX in flux * Growth and evolution of Discord esp. among certain communities (gaming, open source, etc.) * Snap's stickiness against all odds And that doesn't even get into the Slack v Teams v Google Chat space.

What's cool about this is tags can help bootstrap ML models that can eventually automatically classify posts into specific tags.  New mechanism for discovery, news/events, research, etc.

Elon Musk's xAI releases Grok, an AI model that the startup says surpasses rivals in its compute class, including ChatGPT-3.5, to a “limited number” of US users

Grok is an AI modeled after the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, so intended to answer almost anything and, far harder, even suggest what questions to ask!

I know people just really want to shit on X/Elon but this is clearly a good idea.  Domains are valuable.  Handles are valuable.  Twitter should have done this a long time ago.
