After much overpromise and underdeliver, I'd think reporting would be more skeptical: “delivering 500m packages via drone each year [by 2029] ... [but] required at first to use observers and ensure its drones do not travel beyond their line of sight” https://www.theguardian.com/ ...

I think one of the bigger but more subtle concerns with this is that these models often memorize content and can surface it again. If private emails or images can be shown to other people, even slightly modified, that's quite a risk for these companies in launching this quickly.

New generative AI tools announced Wednesday at Meta's Connect event will allow users to edit images and create stickers using text prompts.

Great piece, but I disagree with this point. I think the coverage is so low as to make it irrelevant: “Even if less than one percent of misinformative tweets get a note providing context or correcting them, Community Notes is still providing an exceedingly valuable service” 1/2

@MikeIsaac @sheeraf Yes, small changes to the ranking or features — such as removing the easy reshare button — have small effects that are difficult to detect in experiments. That conclusion is much more limited than saying that algorithms cannot impact people's views.

The biggest problem on the internet right now is the ubiquity of misinformation, propaganda, and scams. There is far too much crap. And there is far too little help from algorithms to help people find reliable information. https://twitter.com/...

AI is killing the web with spam sites, mass article producing “AI editors”, AI-generated junk on Etsy, Reddit, and Wikipedia that exhausts moderators, and more

In recent months, the signs and portents have been accumulating with increasing speed.  Google is trying to kill the 10 blue links.

If your AI demo is mediocre most of the time and crap 20% of the time, it's not easy to make it a product. You have to find rare spot where very high failure rates are tolerable and people are still willing to pay a lot for it. That's about to be a hard lesson for many. 2/2

Great piece in Wired by @doctorow. But enshittification eventually causes the company to die, so isn't in the best interest of the company. It's definitely not maximizing shareholder value or long-term profits. So why does it happen? 1/4 https://twitter.com/...

@GaryMarcus ... Seems to me it could be both a firesale and hedge. If Altman has no idea how to make money, but everyone is telling him this could be huge, then I suppose you'd want a deal like this if you can get it. Personally, I think Microsoft is badly overpaying.

A rare time I disagree with @geoffreyfowler, but an interesting question, I'd say. I think amplification by ranker, trending, and recommender algorithms isn't a right and should be easy to lose, especially if the account is involved in shilling or scams. 1/2 https://twitter.com/...

My view is that reliable, long-lived, and independent accounts should be considered the “crowd” for wisdom of the crowd. Behavior data from other accounts should be mostly ignored. This improves relevance and makes scams, spam, and shilling more expensive for adversaries. 2/2

Increasing dividends or stock buybacks is a sign that executives don't know anything productive to invest profits in, so they're just returning the cash to shareholders. In this case, that's just foolish. Invest in great people, especially people you couldn't normally get.

For Microsoft, this would seem like a good time to increase hiring and poach talent. Unfortunately, instead of this, Microsoft is increasing their dividend. https://twitter.com/...
