NSO couldn't sell its dangerous spyware directly to the USG, so it is trying to sneak in the back door by getting acquired by a spy company that does sell to US law enforcement. https://t.co/4voMVDJ1oB

Much of the commentary I see argues that @FrancesHaugen's critique of Facebook's content moderation is correct, but her anti-cryptography stance is wrong. I think the one mistake points to the other. FB will never get moderation “right” because that is impossible.

Warrants for keyword searches are really scary. The tactic enables police to identify people merely based on what they might have been thinking about, for whatever reason, at some point in the past. 1/n https://t.co/sKijEEVcXn

I agree that my friends at @propublica got this one be really wrong. This could have been a good story, as there seems to be interesting reporting on what metadata WhatsApp collects and how it is used and shared. I wish they'd focussed on that. https://alecmuffett.com/...

Apple delays the rollout of recently announced child safety features, says it will take more time to collect feedback from stakeholders and make improvements

Last month, Apple announced a handful of new child safety features that proved to be controversial, including CSAM detection features for iCloud Photos.

But this is where the difficult and fun part begins. As I wrote about the Apple CSAM scanning proposal, is there any way to engineer client-side scanning where you can be confident it won't devolve to scanning other information stored on a device? https://twitter.com/...

With Apple's announcement that it's going to delay implementation of child safety features until it, you know, actually talks to people and gets feedback, and this news that WhatsApp is going to start encrypting back ups, privacy advocates have a moment to feel good about things.
