Cool to have gotten a mention in the Wall Street Journal. Can't say I have a ton of faith in Whitney Wolfe Herd being able to turn around $BMBL though... [image]

An interview with Bumble CEO Whitney Wolfe Herd on AI being the “most emotionally intelligent matchmaker”, planning an AI-powered matchmaking app, and more

Her userbase is going to eat her alive  —  Bumble is supposed to be “woke” and they've decided that AI is very much “not-woke”, so I'm sure this is going to play out great  —  That...

Just remember that Facebook in 2009 had similar revenues ($777m) to $RDDT today yet had 34% operating margins vs -17% for Reddit. The lack of cost discipline at $RDDT is truly astonishing. For every dollar of revenue they're paying 55c for R&D and I can't figure out what for

Reddit closed up 48%, at $50.44/share, in its NYSE debut, valuing the company at ~$9.5B on a fully diluted basis, just shy of its $10B valuation in August 2021

Big implications here re the nature of TT's disruption. It's come at a VERY heavy $ cost to ByteDance. The GM of 56% for ByteDance at a $62bn revenue scale is woeful vs. low-80s% GM for META at similar rev. scale. https://www.wsj.com/...

Internal ByteDance report: revenue grew nearly 80% YoY to $61.7B in 2021 but operating losses more than tripled YoY from $2.14B to $7.15B due to growth spending

The strategy of spending heavily to build the content flywheel/audience and then subsequently advertiser interest has been working but is obviously quite dangerous when you think about the fickle nature of social media users.

Presumably part of this reflects the heavy cost of compute to train algos (TT's core advantage). What's also fascinating is that BD lost $7bn in FY21. I'd love to know the $ quantum of incentives being paid to advertisers, content creators, as well as for UA.

Probs a net negative. Bad to the extent that it casts doubt on execution re XR + delays payback on investments being made today. Good in terms of cost control that will protect mgns and perhaps help stock Px which has reflexive effect on workforce via SBC. https://www.theinformation.com/ ...

I don't think $FB gets the credit they deserve for their hardware products & this flows through to unwillingness of the investor base to underwrite +ve returns on R&D spend for FB while it's the opposite case for AAPL (but also w less moonshot projects). https://www.theinformation.com/ ... https://twitter.com/...

I've been doing a lot of reading on web3 to educate myself on the topic. By no means an expert but struggling to reconcile the unbridled optimism with the vagueness of web3's promises. This thread is fantastic and makes clear that decentralisation probably isn't a panacea. https://twitter.com/...
