How AI automation can fulfill Thomas Piketty's predictions on rising economic inequality, and why highly progressive taxes on capital can help slow the spiral

@allTheYud We didn't mean to take a position on whether human property rights survive the singularity. Just that *if* owning capital still means anything, inequality explodes. If property rights get totally washed out, we've got bigger problems than inequality.

I've seen a lot of people misunderstand what we're saying. Our claim is that in a world of full automation, inequality will skyrocket (in favor of capital holders). People aren't thinking about the galaxies. The relative wealth differences in a thousand years—or a million—will

New blog post w @pawtrammell : Capital in the 22nd Century Where we argue that while Piketty was wrong about the past, he's probably right about the future.  Piketty argued that without strong redistribution of wealth, inequality will indefinitely increase.  Historically, however, income inequality from capital accumulation has actually been self-correcting.  Labor and capital are complements, so if you build up lots of capital, you'll lower its returns and raise wages (since labor now becomes the bottleneck).  But once AI/robotics fully substitute for labor, this correction mechanism breaks...

Robert Conquest had 3 famous laws of politics. The first: “Everyone is conservative about what they know best.” In the same vein: “Everyone thinks that the median job is far easier to automate than their own job.”

@deredleritt3r I think we might actually agree on the state of models. For example, the reason I haven't hired a research assistant is that I think it would be hard to find someone who is such an improvement on these models in answering my questions that the greater hassle and latency of

As part of this interview, Satya Nadella gave Dylan Patel (founder of SemiAnalysis) and me an exclusive first-look at their brand-new Fairwater 2 datacenter.

“I can make the argument that if you're a model company, you may have a winner's curse. You may have done all the hard work, done unbelievable innovation, except it's one copy away from that being commoditized.” @satyanadella [video]

The most interesting part for me is where @karpathy describes why LLMs aren't able to learn like humans.  As you would expect, he comes up with a wonderfully evocative phrase to describe RL: “sucking supervision bits through a straw.”  A single end reward gets broadcast across every token in a successful trajectory, upweighting even wrong or irrelevant turns that lead to the right answer.
