DeepSeek just released a pretty shocking new paper. They really buried the lede here by referring to it simply as DeepSeek OCR. While it's a very strong OCR model, the purpose of it and the implications of their approach go far beyond what you'd expect of “yet another OCR

DeepSeek releases DeepSeek-OCR, a vision language model designed for efficient vision-text compression, enabling longer contexts with less compute

the new frontier of OCR from @deepseek_ai , exploring optical context compression for LLMs, is running blazingly fast on vLLM ⚡ (~2500 tokens/s on A100-40G) — powered by vllm==0.8....

@DavidSacks Whether or not they sincerely believe this stuff or it's a cynical regulatory capture strategy long-game, the net results are the same, which is that it slows us down and helps China overtake us in this critical technology.

David Sacks says Anthropic is running a “regulatory capture strategy based on fear-mongering”, in response to Anthropic co-founder Jack Clark's AI policy essay

On Tuesday, White House AI “czar” and venture capitalist David Sacks intensified a frustration that has been building for months.

These announcements are coming at a wild rate now. By open sourcing so much of its very clever work, DeepSeek has dramatically accelerated AI research for China and the rest of the world. And a bit of competitive rivalry among China' tech giants probably didn't hurt, either.

OK, so now we know just how much more efficient DeepSeek is for inference in terms of total tokens per second processed. They are doing roughly 7-8x more tokens per second on an H-800 (a crippled, export-control version on the H-100) than the open-source state of the art on H-100

I wrote up all my thoughts on whether NVDA stock is finally a decent short (or at least not a good thing to own at this point). I'm a huge bull when it comes to the power and potential of AI, but there are just too many forces arrayed against them to sustain supernormal profits.
