People act like there are no tradeoffs for tech and product decisions.  Yes Apple benefits from having an ecosystem that is less open but users also benefit.  The downsides of their approach are also the upsides.  The far superior UX - iMessage over SMS, AirPods over vanilla Bluetooth, App Store over installing random apps with no security - is why Apple is so successful.
