And so the Online Safety Bill becomes an Act... As someone who has, one way or another, called for Government regulation for a decade now, this is actually quite an emotional thing to see. A new era begins.

Care about stopping hate speech? Or stemming information warfare? Countering extremism? Electoral integrity? This single move is going to remove a vast chunk of social media research that informs all of that. There should be questions in Parliament about this. https://twitter.com/...

Twitter details new API access tiers: Free with 1.5K tweets/month at app level, Basic for $100/month, and Enterprise; old APIs will stop working within 30 days

Twitter has finally confirmed some of the details and pricing for the new version of its API.

No Researcher in the world should be talking about online harms, presenting social media research or talking about how it's changing society without also raising the threat of data access. Because it won't be researchers who fix this one, but everyone else https://twitter.com/...

Our @BBCClick investigation airs today, following researchers @ISDglobal who've staked out a huge ISIS cache of over 90,000 documents. It receives (researchers judge) c. 10,000 visits a month, 60% direct clicks, 40% social media (almost all YouTube). https://www.wired.co.uk/... https://twitter.com/...

This story is an intricate one. Partly it's about the onset of decentralisation and what happens when we lean away from the tech giants. In part, how truly global crime often doesn't seem to get picked up by any police force. And then the sheer indestructibility of information. https://twitter.com/...

Politically, this will probably hurt Trump more than Twitter's interstitials. Reddit is *such* an important hub for the alt-right organisationally. It's been one of their strongholds, from which they sally forth into hostile territory https://twitter.com/...

I've written a piece today about the ‘infodemic’. To me, it's not about information but organisation. There is a parallel world out there that sees the lockdown as a tool of social control, complete with activism, gift shops and meaning for its members. https://www.bbc.co.uk/...
