The $200/mo is not what surprises me, my take: • OpenAI needs revenue to justify massive valuation • Pushing subscriptions over API access to increase switching cost/commoditization of LLMs Further down the road to capture user $$$, they'll need vertical integration: • Their AI-first (e.g.agentic) browser (bypassing low-quality AI flooded web, integration with trustworthy webs, ecommerce, etc.) • OS-level or close to OS-level integration w/agents for search, news, shopping. OpenAI wants to capture AI value directly, not through third-party developers.
