According to CrowdTangle, there have been 608 public posts with 174,910 interactions since yesterday about a supposed “IMPORTANT PRIVACY UPDATE” regarding a new feature called NameDrop in iPhone iOS17.  Most of those 608 posts are from police departments.  IDK why police departments are spreading fearbait about an iPhone update on Facebook.  Maybe some fusion center disseminated a hyperbolic advisory without understanding how anything works?  🤷🏻‍♀️ NameDrop requires *both people* to choose to share in order to exchange contact info.  It doesn't happen surreptitiously just because the feature is turned on.

Many local US police departments are fearmongering by warning about the privacy risk of the iPhone's NameDrop tool, which is used to wirelessly share contacts

Some police departments have said the new iPhone feature is risky.  Don't worry about it.

@KassandraSeven I've seen several friends share it :) what a weird viral rumor? and it's being spread by police so I can see why it's going around.
