[Thread] Substack quietly added a feature that forced subscribers to download the app to read full newsletters, but says it reverted the change after complaints

Gergely Orosz / @gergelyorosz : X: @shakeelhashim , @gergelyorosz , @gergelyorosz , @gergelyorosz , and @leozera See also Mediagazer X: Shakeel / @shakeelhashim : I've been livid about this all week, and it's made us seriously consider leaving @SubstackInc Gergely Orosz / @gergelyorosz : Substack told me they rolled this back for me after my complaint. They did not explain why they rolled it out without informing me. Or why they built it in the first place - given this change would turn Substack from a newsletter platform to an an app (those not downloading the Gergely Orosz / @gergelyorosz : We all know how Medium ended... That Substack built this experiment and then just decided to roll it out without telling writers is a bad sign for the platform Gergely Orosz / @gergelyorosz : This is how they killed email: When you tap on “view entire message” you cannot view the entire one (like before). Substack no longer sends it out. Beehiiv, Ghost, Buttondown etc all send out the full email. Always. If this stays, Substack is an app, not a newsletter [image] Leo / @leozera : @GergelyOrosz They have one job: send emails. If they are going to put your content behind an app (and in the future paywalls, etc), it is no longer a newsletter, it is a posting platform like Medium See also Mediagazer
